Weekend cooking @ 24 May 2009
It has been quite some time since I experimented new recipes. I decided to try this recipe on Friday for lunch. This recipe is actually from my mum, so it's not that new but of course new to me for cooking it the first time. Simple yet tasty.
Ingredients
250g okra
4 tbsp dried shrimps, soaked and coarsely chopped (can have more if you like dried shrimps)
1 1/2 tbsp tomyam paste
One clove garlic (chopped)
1 tbsp granulated belacan
1) Sliced okra diagonally
2) Heat oil in wok. Fry garlic and dried shrimps until fragrant.
3) Put in okra and stir fry until tender (but still crispy).
4) Once the okra is tender, add in tomyam paste and granulated belacan. Stir fry for another 2-3 minutes. Dish out and serve immediately with hot plain rice.
Mamak mee (Peranakan style)
This is another speciality by Darren. I've been bugging him to cook this for quite some time. And finally, he cooked it on Saturday afternoon. It tasted so good that one of our guest actually ate 2 large plates. Lucky still got enough for us for breakfast the following day.
Ingredients
1kg yellow noodles
300g bean sprouts
250g shelled prawns
6 shallots thinly sliced
3-4 tbsp chili boh (blended dried & red chillies) - Depending on how spicy you want it to be
1 tsp granulated belacan
Method
1) Heat oil in a wok and fry the shallots until fragrant
2) Add the chili boh and granulated belacan for seasoning
3) Next, add the shelled prawns
4) Put in the yellow noodles and continue frying until noodles are tender
5) Finally, add in the bean sprouts and fry for another 2-3 minutes. Dish out on a serving platter.
Easy huh? But of course hubby cook this better than me. So I'll let him do the job =p. Best to eat with white vinegar. This is trully the peranakan style.
