My sponsored child

I finally received a post from World Vision Malaysia yesterday informing the child details I will be sponsoring moving forward. For those who missed my recent blog, I've recently signed up to sponsor a child. With a small contribution of RM50 per month, the money will be used by World Vision to find solutions to the myriad of challenges that a child faces growing up in a poor country.

My sponsored child is a little boy turning 5 years old in June. As much as I would like to share his photo, I think it would be appropriate not to do so for confidentiality purpose. Anyway, all I can say is that he is an adorable boy with big black eyes.

He stays in Coimbatore City in Tamil Nadu State of India covering 5 slums. With a population estimated at 60,000, the major problems are poor sanitation, low income, poor infrastructure and high alcoholism.

Coming from a family of 2 siblings (not too sure if he is the youngest or the eldest), only the father is employed as a daily wage earner. Based on information provided, average income of the families in Coimbatore is from Rp1,000 (USD20) to Rp1,200 (USD24) per month. That's so little!!! Meaning to say, it's only RM80 per month (USD24 @ 3.3 exchange rate). It's so sad!

Imagine how lucky the children in Malaysia is. Children these days as the Chinese saying "Siong kam" (wrap with gold). They are so pampered and nurtured with tender loving care.

Sponsorship will be used to help in the following area:
  • Healthcare: Provides basic medical treatment and education on AIDS, alcoholism, polio, eye diseases etc.
  • Education: Awards scholarships to deserving students and equips schools with tables and chairs.
  • Funding: Make available funds to start up small-scale businesses (eg. ornament making, goat rearing), provides vocational skills training for adults and youths.
  • Infrastructure: Ensures that electricity supply is available to homes, provides drainage and disposal facilities.

Let's hope for all the best to this sponsored child of mine.
